The Pros and Cons of Bagged Vacuum Cleaners

Pros

Hygienic

Bagged vacuum cleaners are designed to securely contain dirt, debris and possible allergens within the bag during use, and during removal for disposal. This means that you can easily remove the bag and dispose of the debris without making a mess and letting the allergens back into the air. Also, with bagged vacuums, you do not have to clean or replace the filter as often.

Best Option for Allergies

Bagged vacuums are highly recommended for people who suffer from allergies. As mentioned above, it securely locks away dust, dirt, and allergens. And due to how airtight the bags are, it is nearly impossible for the allergens to escape and re-enter the air, even during disposal.

HEPA Filtration

Most of the time, bagged vacuums come with a HEPA filter, which means that they have proven to capture most allergens. HEPA filtration is becoming the standard for bagged vacuum cleaners, but can be found in other types of vacuums as well.

Cons

Must Replace/Buy Bags

Since each bag must be replaced, once it is full, you are committing to an on-going expense to operate your vacuum cleaner. The price of the bags depends on which make and model you choose.

The Pros and Cons of Bagless Vacuum Cleaners

Pros

Easy to Detect When Full

Instead of having a bag, a bagless vacuum has what we call a “chamber”. This chamber makes it easy to know when it is full and needs to be emptied. You will also be able to simply glance over and notice if it is working correctly or not.

Eco-Friendly

Since bagless vacuums do not require you to dispose bag after bag, this is by far the more eco-friendly option. You simply empty the chamber in the trash or compost bin and that is all.

Cons

Greater Exposure to Allergens

The largest con associated with bagless vacuums is that they are not as allergen friendly as bagged vacuums. Since all of the dirt, dust, debris, and other contaminates are gathered in an air-tight chamber, and not a sealed bag, when emptied the allergens could escape back into the air.

The Filters Are Costly

In order to maintain a bagless vacuum the filters are required to be replaced, from time to time, depending on the manufacturer. These filters can be more costly than buying the replacement bags.
